iHeart Media with Nicky Sparrow, Market President

Nicky S., let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

I tell people that I am truly living the “American Dream”. I truly started from the bottom and now I'm one of the very few African American female Market Presidents in the radio industry. I began my career in the field of broadcast marketing in a small property in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1999, and has been an unrelenting force ever since. My early baby steps into the marketing business were followed by a 100 yard dash into Clear Channel now iHeart Media management to reach her current position as Market President of Jacksonville, FL.

Has it been a smooth road for you?

I had to learn to be comfortable with who I am. Being a female in a male dominated industry has its own challenges. So many women try to mimic their male counterparts. I'm fortunate that I am very comfortable in my skin. I love being a women and I will NOT shrink or minimize who I am to make other people comfortable. I will invite myself to tables that I feel I have earned access to.

Please tell us about your WERK:

Please share any words of wisdom sister to sister.

If I could start over I would celebrate myself along the way. I was so focused on what was next that I didn't celebrate all the milestones that I achieved along the way.

I'm happier now than I've ever been because I have finally established a work life balance. I take time to enjoy what I've worked so hard for. That is not to say don't go full blast for your dreams and goals but you have to give yourself room to relax and enjoy it.
